The annual World Mental Health Day on October 10 has even more significance this year as we continue to live through a global pandemic. And the upcoming U.S. presidential election is not helping—the election is a source of stress for more Americans, affecting more than 68% of U.S. adults, according to the American Psychological Association. But while mental health awareness is getting more attention, the magnitude of mental health burden around the world is something that predates 2020.

“Our world wasn’t set up to respond to the growing mental health needs before COVID-19, and it certainly isn’t now. That’s why now more than ever we need the world to move for mental health, and as individuals, communities, businesses, governments and funders we must prioritize action on, and investment in mental health,” according to Elisha London, CEO and Founder of United for Global Mental Health.

Undertreatment is a big problem when it comes to caring for mental health disorders, which is estimated by the World Health Organization to impact 970 million people worldwide. Depression and anxiety disorders are the most common disorders. The current first-line treatment is medication.

“When it comes to mental health and brain health, the system has failed all along. There are millions of American that have Depression, Anxiety, Cognitive Impairment, and most of them don’t come to see us. And when they do, they refuse or decline our treatment because they dislike our medication,” says Niraxx co-founder Dr. Paolo Cassano, MD, PhD. He is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Director of Photomedicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Division of Neuropsychiatry. He has 10+ years of experience in the treatment of neuropsychiatric and mood and anxiety disorders with low-level laser therapy and brain bioenergetics.

Dr. Cassano believes that care providers need to “stop offering the same solution [medication]” and that Self Care is the answer. His vision has helped bring to life our first wellness device, Niraxx Brain Pacer™.

Pace-Perfect Brain Balance

Niraxx Brain Pacer™ is a wearable self-care solution that delivers effective, calculated doses of photomedicine to stimulate the brain’s natural energy and oxygen metabolism, providing the needed cognitive and mental wellbeing boost anytime, anywhere.

Benefits include increased energy production, increased cerebral blood flow, reduced inflammation, and enhanced brain cell repair and regeneration (neuroplasticity).

Neuromodulation Basics

Niraxx Brain Pacer™ uses near-infrared brain neuromodulation or tPBM. Near infrared light offers a deeper penetration compared to other light wavelengths. It is safe, non-invasive, and has over 4,000 peer-reviewed publications on its efficacy.

Neuromodulation is the use of a stimulus to alter, or modulate, nerve activity; light (tPBM) is a type of device neuromodulation technologies. Other device neuromodulation technologies include magnetic field stimulation and electrical current stimulation. Light stimulation is natural, less invasive, and offers the advantage of delivering focused stimulation without stimulation of off-target regions.
